Surfski paddling, or to use its relatively new official name, Ocean Racing, has developed from the shorter Life Saving “around the can” events, into the strong offshore sport that it is today.
South Africa will host the World Championships in 2025 in Durban, after many years of strong performances at the international showpiece event, including a few World Champions across all categories.
South Africa has always enjoyed a strong surfski culture with events such as the PE to East London, Scottburgh to Brighton and Pirates-Umhlanga-Pirates attracting big entries. More recently the Pete Marlin, Freedom Paddle and Cape point Challenge have become must-do events for paddlers from all over the country.
